![]() ![]() The delectable six-cylinder X3 M40i xDrive delivers the full BMW performance experience with an opening price of $70,500.2020 BMW X3 Overview Is the 2020 BMW X3 a Good Used SUV? The BMW X3 xDrive 30i starts at $55,200, with the plug-in hybrid X3 xDrive30e asking $64,990. Compare this to the Audi Q5’s 731L/1,529L capacity, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC’s 620L/1,679L, and the X3 comes out on top, but the Cadillac XT5 is the segment champ with storage measuring 850L/1,784L. The plug-in hybrid model loses a bit of space due to the under-floor battery. While no third-row seating is offered, there’s a broad and flat load space behind the second-row rear seat measuring 812L, expandable to 1,775L with the 40/20/40 split seat folded. The X3’s practical profile gives the compact SUV plenty of usable interior space and generous headroom. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but you’ll be paying extra for rear seat heat and recline function, ambient lighting, glass sunroof, wireless charge pad, and ventilated front seats. The standard 12.3-inch display is plenty big, and the driver gets a configurable digital gauge cluster. For some, this might be a good thing as the dash and console still have plenty of hard buttons and knobs for controlling HVAC and audio functions. The X3’s cabin is stylish and well put together, although having been around since 2018, the X3 does not sport BMW’s new curved screen display and latest infotainment system. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, BMW’s score of 184 Problems Per 100 Vehicles (PP100) is just above the industry average. The current generation BMW X3 gets a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, and a top 5 Star rating from the NHTSA. Another $2,000 nets the Advanced Driver Assistance Package that adds adaptive cruise and lane keep assist along with associated semi-autonomous features. The X3 arrives with a host of standard safety kit - forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic warning, rear automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and safe exit warning. On gas alone, the PHEV is rated at 11.4 L/100 km city, 8.6 highway and 10.1 combined. ![]() The fuel economy champ will be the PHEV X3 xDrive30e, assuming one makes use of the 30 km EV range, which has been calculated to average 3.9 L/100 km. The six-cylinder X3 M40i xDrive is not a whole lot different at 10.9 L/100 km city, 9.0 highway and 10.1 combined. The four-cylinder BMW X3 xDrive30i is rated by Natural Resources Canada at 11.0 L/100 km city, 8.4 highway and 9.9 combined on premium fuel. All X3 flavours show a firm yet acceptable ride with fine body control, sharp steering, and a dynamic cohesiveness that we’ve long associated with BMW. Opt for the plug-in hybrid X3 xDrive30e and you’ll get about 30 km of EV range along with 288 hp and 310 lb-ft from the four-pot hybrid powertrain. The X3 M40i xDrive turns up the heat courtesy of BMW’s celebrated 3.0L turbocharged inline six that, with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft on tap, gives this crossover an impressive turn of speed. It drives all four wheels through a capable eight-speed automatic transmission. Output is 248 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque from 1,450 rpm. The base X3 xDrive30i runs with BMW’s smooth and torquey 2.0L turbo four that features both port and direct injection. The BMW X3 carries forward into 2024 unchanged. While not as stylish as rivals from Sweden, Italy or Korea, the somewhat sober X3 delivers on practicality, quality and offers either four-cylinder gas, four-cylinder PHEV or six-cylinder gas power. The 2024 BMW X3 competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLC, Audi Q5, Cadillac XT5, Porsche Macan, Volvo XC60, Genesis GV70, Jaguar F-Pace, and Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The X3 luxury compact crossover showcases BMW’s strengths – engaging handling, silky turbo power and controlled, compliant ride. ![]()
